Introduction

Jukskei South Africa (JSA) is grateful and excited to design and develop its Long-Term Participant Development (LTPD) Guide, truelly “Jukskei for All.”   Jukskei was targeted by SASCOC to become part of the 2nd Wave of Sportscodes to design their own LTPD under the careful guidance of a team led by Prof Istvan Balyi, Sport Scientist and founder of the National Coaching Institute British Columbia  (Sport Canada) & SASCOC.

This development model describes a eight stage process in the training of participants in Jukskei.  The model is participant centered, with thrusts from coaching, administration, officials and sport science.  The model recognises the developmental age, the maturation level of individuals, and synchronizes the participation with training and completion in Jukskei –a Precicion Throwing Sport for All.Power
The LTPD will change Jukskei in SA completely to become a scientifically and planned sport developed from a leisure and recreational family activity.  Many set patterns of thoughts, practicing of Jukskei and operating within the sport will have to adapt to this paradigm of scientifically proven concepts and integrate new knowledge in participation.  No longer will changes happen in boardrooms and in documents (on paper) – we will have to be able to adapt, to become flexible and to belief that the LTPD can assist Jukskei to grow and develop.  In order to become a “Sport for All” we will have to change the very technical and difficult sport to more accessible rules and competitions.

Voorwoord

Foreword

This guide introduces and explains the conceptual framework for participant development and as such provides essential guidance for Jukskei SA, its members and participants as we pursue the shared vision of evolving into a sport system that is in the forefront of theory and practice.  This LTPD Guide, which is consistent with Sport Canada’s Long-Term Participant Development Resource Paper and based on guides provided from other sport codes in SA, and customised for Jukskei.  The intention of the LTPD is to act as catalysts for change and improvement that can help our sport achieve its goals of fostering both life-long participation and international excellence.  This resource guide includes an assessment of the current state of Jukskei in South Africa as well as a description of the strategies we believe are required to reach our goals.

To reach these goals will require:
• A cooperative partnership between Jukskei SA, Provincial Federations, Unions, Clubs and Schools, within a sport system that recognises and facilitates the roles of all participants.  These participants include both those that are integral to the JSA and those that are external to the organisation (e.g. multi-sport organisations, community recreational organisations, schools, universities, etc.).
• Scientific and systematic coaching development at all levels.
• An effective participant development framework from entry to elite levels.
• Programmes tailored specifically to a participant’s development stage.
• Long-term strategies rather than a short term focus.
Jukskei South Africa (JSA) is grateful and excited to design and develop its Long-Term Participant Development (LTPD) Guide, truelly “Jukskei for All.”

Die behoefte aan ‘n Langer Termyn Deelnemer Ontwikkelingsmodel (LTDO) in Jukskei

The need for a Long Term Participant Development (LTPD) model in Jukskei

• Gaan oor VERANDERING!!
• ‘n Konstante VERANDERING van
 DENKE
 GESINDHEID
 SPORTBELEWING
 DEELNAME
 BESTUUR

No longer are children of players the future but will children of non-players become the future leaders and the existence of Jukskei.  No longer can Jukskei be a traditional Afrikaans sport played with a homogeneous group with similar background – we have to make the mind shift if we want to survive for another 70 years.  The primary stakeholders will have to acknowledge that everybody will have to be responsible and provide direction.  The current generation will have to maintain the strengths of the sport (tactical, precision and very sociable sport) to transform to new concepts both retaining the characteristics that make Jukskei fun and sports for all
The LTPD
• Is about CHANGE!!
• Is a constant CHANGE of
 THOUGHTS
 ATTITUDE
 SPORT FULFILLMENT
 PARTICIPATION
 MANAGEMENT

The LTPD will rely on the following pillars that will have to fulfill the following requirements:

Deelnemers
• Geniet die sport.
• Ontwikkeling voldoende fisiese geletterdheid.
• Ontwikkeling voldoende Jukskei vaardigheid.

The JSA / Provincial Bodies
• Ensuring appropriate programming is in place for use by clubs, coaches, officials, etc.
• Being a source of information, expertise and support; providing necessary information and communications in the development of all the participants.

Van Inheemse Spel tot Wêreld Presiese Gooi Sport

From Indigenous Game to World Precision Throwing

There is a long journey for Jukskei ahead.  Our current limited pool of participants is advantageous in that our efforts are less impeded by the historical legacy of larger, better-established sports.  In the 1980’s there were more than 30 000 registered players.  The LTPD model provides us with a clear set of principles that will serve to underpin and guide our efforts to turn Jukskei into a popular and winning sport and to become a “Sport for All”.

Wat is die LTDO?

What is the LTPD?

Jukskei is ‘n laat- spesialisasie sport.

This LTPD model will become the benchmark to measure and evaluate the effectiveness of participation, administration and the supporting systems within Jukskei as a sport.  The model clearly delineates “what needs to be done” and “why”, if our sport is to flourish.  Building an implementation plan from our strategy will enable us to create a comprehensive roadmap to success.  Ultimately, by understanding and adhering to LTPD principles and practices, an optimal developmental environment for current and future jukskei participants to be established.

Jukskei is a late specialisation sport.  Characteristic of late specialisation sports is that specialisation prior to age 10 is not recommended since it contributes to early burn-out, drop-out, and retirement from training and competition (evidence in many studies).  This document - the LTPD Guide for Jukskei - utilises a number of stages that are seamlessly linked in with the generic LTPD concept, but with an Jukskei-specific focus.  The latter focus reflects the requirements of the sport at the highest level, yet retains, at its core, the concept of age and ability appropriate programming and evaluation.

Within the eight stage LTPD model for Jukskei the first three stages focus on fun and physical literacy  Children grow and improve within the sport through programs designed to introduce the basic technical ability in an adventurous environment, which assists in the development of overall motor and sport ability.  Following the first three stages, there is a transition to either further development or excellence in Jukskei or life-long participation in Jukskei and/or other sports at the recreational or less competitive level.  For participants who wish to pursue excellence, increasing specialisation in Jukskei and an expanding focus on competition permit them to mature athletically and aspire to national and international podiums.  Regardless of the level of excellence or sport-mastery achieved however, participation in Jukskei can enhance the health, fitness and mental well-being of South Africans of all ages.  Jukskei is a true “Sport for Life”

• 1. Aktiewe Begin
• 2. FUNdamentele
• 3. Leer om te Oefen

The first 3 stages encourage physical literacy  and sport for all:
1. Active Start
2. FUNdamentals
3. Learning to Train

Die volgende 4 fases Fokus op Uitnemendheid:
• 4. Oefen om te Oefen
• 5. Leer om te kompeteer
• 6. Oefen om te kompeteer
• 7. Oefen om te Wen

The next 4 stages focus on Excellence:
4. Training to Train
5. Learning to Compete
6. Training to Compete
7. Training to Win

• 8. Lewenslank Aktief

The final stage encourages life-long physical activity  :
8. Active for Life

Die Tien Sleutel Faktore wat die LTDO beϊnvloed

The Ten Key Factors Influencing LTPD

Research has identified 10 important factors that influence participant development. LTPD programs will ensure that participants can experience optimal development in Jukskei as well as lifelong involvement in fisiese activity and a healthy lifestyle.

Deurlopende Verbetering (kaizen)

Knowledge, understanding, and sport techniques and theories are constantly evolving.  The concept of continuous improvement is drawn from the respected Japanese industrial philosophy known as kaizen.  This concept extends to all aspects of Jukskei SA and its partner organisations (provincial affiliates and clubs) in our efforts to continually improve and evolve into a vibrant and progressive sports community.  LTPD is a dynamic framework that utilises continuous adjustments based on key principles.  LTPD promotes integration between sport, fisiese education, recreation, health and education.

The FUNdamentals - Developing Fisiese Geletterdheid
Fundamental movement skills (running, throwing, catching, hopping, bounding, etc.) and fundamental sport skills equals physical literacy  and reading the environment.  These FUNdamental movement skills should be introduced during childhood through FUN and games.  Jukskei provide an excellent introduction to skills required for Jukskei: balance, agility, coordination, concentration, rythm and strength.  It is important that children develop the basic skills before the onset of their growth spurt.  A person that does not achieve basic coordination skills may have a lower opportunity to succeed in a variety of sports.

The literature on participant growth and development indicates that children should master the fundamental movement skills and fundamental sport skills before learning more complicated jukskei skills and strategies.

Kronologiese Ouderdom vs. Ontwikkelings Ouderdom

Chronological Age vs. Developmental Age
Growth and development varies greatly between individuals.  LTPD considers each participant’s developmental age rather than chronological age to ensure appropriate programs are introduced as the individual grows and matures.  Identifying early, average, and late matures will enable the coach to design appropriate training and competition programs that match each participant’s trainability and readiness.  The beginning of the growth spurt and the peak of the growth spurt are very significant in LTPD applications to training and program design.

Mental, Cognitive and Emotional Development
LTPD focuses on the whole participant.  Training should include fisiese, mental, cognitive, and emotional development.  A holistic approach to the development of a Jukskei participant includes emphasis on ethics, fair play and character building throughout.  Participants will learn life skills through sport as they progress through the stages of the Jukskei model.  Cognitive, mental and emotional (affective) elements have a significant effect on participants' performance, and must be prioritised in long-term participant development.

Spesialisasie

Specialisation
Jukskei is an intermediate to late specialization sport.  Participants could move to specialize in between the ages of 12 - 15 to optimize their potential to reach world class performance levels.  This does not mean that they should wait to begin Jukskei at this age, but they should participate in a variety of different sports prior to this age to achieve “physical literacy  ”.

Early specialisation in a late specialisation sport can contribute to:
• Overemphasis on sport specific preparation/ one-sided preparation
• Lack of development of basic movement and sport skills
• Overuse injuries
• Early burnout
• Premature retirement from training and competition.

Opleibaarheid

Trainability
All areas of performance are always trainable, but for participants to reach their maximum potential, windows of optimal trainability must be identified. Trainability focuses on how participants respond to the training programs at different stages of their growth and development, allowing coaches to design appropriate programs to take advantage of their most significant training periods. If Jukskei participants are to reach their genetic potential, they must do the right type of training at the right time. If they do not, they will still have the potential to be very good, but they will never be as good as they might have been.

Periodisasie (Jaarlikse afrigting, kompetisie & herstel plan)

Periodisation (Annual training, competition & recovery plan)
Periodization entails coordinating all aspects of training, competition and recovery into a systematic, scientific, integrated plan that will enable the athlete/ team to achieve the best possible performance at the desired time.

In Jukskei this means that coaches must decide what needs to be trained, and when to train. The result will be a plan for training, competition, and recovery to produce optimal improvements in performance and achieve peak performance when required.

The Ten Year Rule
Scientific research has concluded that it takes a minimum of 10 years and 10,000 hours of training for a talented athlete to reach elite levels.  For athlete and coach, this translates into slightly more than 3 hours of training or competition daily for 10 years.  There are no shortcuts; participant development is a long-term process.  Short-term performance goals must never be allowed to undermine the long-term goals.

Calendar Planning for Competition
Optimal competition planning at all stages is critical to the development of an athlete. At certain stages, developing the vaardigheid is more important than competition. At later stages, the ability to compete becomes the focus. Jukskei is fortunate to have an abundance of competitions, but care must be taken to ensure that programs at each developmental stage follow an appropriate ratio of training-to-competition.
The domestic competitive and event calendar must support and be aligned with LTPD stages.  Different stages of development and different levels of participation have different requirements for the type, frequency and level of competition.  During the first 4 stages of LTPD  (i.e. all stages up to Training to Train), training and development take precedence over competitions and short-term success.  During the later stages participants need to experience a variety of competitive situations and perform well at high level events.

System Alignment and Integration
LTPD recognizes that each athlete’s development is affected by the variety of different training environments they experience – such as club programs, recreational sports, physical education programs, and school and university teams – as well as the activities of their local, regional, provincial and national associations.   To optimise player development, LTPD asks that these different groups and institutions work cooperatively to serve the best interests of the athletes, ensuring that they are mutually supportive, clear in their roles and responsibilities, and aware of how they contribute to athlete development.

Die 10 S’e van Afrigting en Prestasie

The 10 S’s of Training and Performance

Stamina (Endurance)
The sensitive period for training stamina occurs at the onset of Peak Height Velocity (PHV)1, commonly known as the adolescent growth spurt.  Athletes need increased focus on aerobic capacity training as they enter PHV, and they should be progressively introduced to aerobic power as their growth rate decelerates.

Krag

Sterkte
There are two sensitive periods of trainability for strength in girls: immediately after PHV and during the onset of menarche. Boys have one sensitive period beginning 12 to 18 months after PHV.

Spoed

Speed
In both boys and girls, there are two sensitive periods of trainability for speed.  For girls, the first sensitive period occurs between ages 6-8 years, and the second period occurs between 11-13 years.  For boys, the first sensitive period occurs between ages 7-9 years, and the second period occurs between 13-16 years.  During the first sensitive period, training should focus on developing agility and quickness; during the second period, training should focus on developing the anaerobic lactic energy system.

Tegniese Vaardigheid

Skill  - Technical
Girls and boys both have one sensitive period for skill training.  For girls, the period is between ages 8-11 years, while in boys it is 9-12 years (Learning to Train stage).  During this period, young athletes should be developing physical literacy – that is, competence in the fundamental movement and sport skills that form the foundation of all sports

Soepelheid

Suppleness (Flexibility)
The sensitive period of trainability for suppleness occurs between ages 6-10 years in both girls and boys.  However, special attention should also be paid to flexibility during PHV.

Struktuur /statuur

Structure / Stature
This component describes the six stages of growth in the human body and links them to the sensitive periods of accelerated adaptation to training. Stature (individual height) is measured before, during, and after maturation to track the developmental age of the athlete. By tracking developmental age, coaches can identify the sensitive periods of skill acquisition and physical development (endurance, strength, speed and flexibility) and adjust training programs accordingly

Sielkunde

(p)Sychology
Sport is a physical and mental challenge.  Maintaining high levels of concentration while remaining relaxed with the confidence to succeed is a skill essential to long-term performance in any sport.  Possessing ‘mental toughness’ while training and competing under extreme pressure and duress is especially important to success at the high performance level.  At the same time, these mental skills also enhance everyday life.

Lewensmiddele

Sustenance
Sustenance recognizes a broad range of components that serve the central purpose of replenishing the body, thereby preparing the athlete for the volume and intensity required for optimal training. Sustenance addresses several areas: nutrition, hydration, rest, sleep, and regeneration.  As with problems in overtraining or over-competition, failure to address sustenance can lead to player burnout.
Jukskei is played in the sun and mostly in the summer – care must be taken to take all precautions that particpants do not suffer from exposure to the sun.

Schooling (Education, Career and Family/friends)

Each player’s school needs must be considered in the design of training and competition programs.  Not only should school sports and physical education classes be taken into account, but also academic loads and timing of exams.  When possible, training camps and competition tours should complement, not conflict with, the timing of major academic events at school.  Coaches should monitor potential overstress in their athletes resulting from schooling, exams, peer groups, family, and boyfriend or girlfriend relationships, as well as increased training volume and intensities.  A good balance needs to be established between all factors.

Sosio-kultureel

Socio-Cultural

Sport activities expose players to various forms of social interaction and stress, beginning with their participation at the community level.  Eventually, their participation may also lead them to international travel and multicultural experiences if they pursue high-performance competition.

Ander oorwegings in oefening

Other Considerations in Trainability
Children, youth and adults may begin playing squash after the sensitive periods of trainability for speed, skill, and suppleness have past. These individuals are therefore dependent on schools, recreation programs, and other sports to stimulate development of these capacities.
